We spent a good part of Thursday on Rock Island, which is always a cool way to spend a day! We took the beautiful walk up through meadow and woods to the lighthouse. The lighthouse was cleaned up and restored by volunteers a few years ago. It's amazing to see the before and after pictures of all the work they did!!! It was basically abandoned years ago when an automated light was installed, and trashed by vandals. Now you can take a free tour of the old lighthouse as it might have looked in the early 1900s, and learn all kinds of cool things! They even have a replica of the Fresnel lens that was in the tower when it closed, which you can see when you climb up into the tiny light tower. Erik also got the chance to work a pump--the likes of which he had never seen before! Then we went back down to the old boathouse next to the dock. The Icelandic architecture and furnishings are always fascinating. And last, but not least, we found a nice spot on the shore to have a picnic of string cheese, cheese curds, cherries and other regular stuff ;-) But we didn't have that until AFTER we swam--the water was lovely! This was also the week of the EAA Convention in Oshkosh, so there were planes all over the place. One crazy pilot landed on a tiny strip of land between the islands and his friends kept buzzing him! That's the railing from the Karfi in the bottom of the picture, as we rode back from Rock Island. Then we RELAXED. . . spent some time laying in the backyard reading, watching the bugs. . . just chilling out. . . . . . until the sky started to change and we heard thunder! Then we went up to the tower and watched a storm roll in. :-D It sprinkled a tiny little bit, but mostly zoomed around the island and out over the water. We stopped at Schoolhouse on the way back home to see how the waves and sky looked. And THEN we went to the Alby and Erik had his first Wisconsin-fried cheese curd!Oy vey, but I miss the CHEEEEESE!!!!
In other recent, crappy news, someone is messing with our mail. We're waiting to hear back from the Postmaster to see what options we have. :-/
