Fall is Busy!

I haven't been very good about posting after all of my resolutions; fall just seems to get crazy busy around here!

My goal is to wind up our long-ago WI trip later this week, but tonight I thought I'd give a quick update about what's been going on around here.

First of all, our bedroom is painted!! It's the first of many rooms that really, really need it, and it's exciting to have one finished! :-D Our bathroom will be next (that's as much paint as we have at the moment, though we've chosen most of the colors finally).

Thomas was confused and a little concerned about the moving of furniture . . . The cats, of course, had a ball with the sheet covering the headboard and bed--Sam on the 0utside, Rosie on the inside.I'm not sure if Nuri didn't realize it was Rosie under there, or if he thought he'd be safe because she couldn't see him (they're relationship is still rocky at best), but not thirty seconds after he started playing she shot out from under the sheet and was after him. After I separated them, the boys decided they could continue to have fun without her. We are very happy with the color (I'll take a picture once we have the pictures up, etc.)--a kind of grey/green that looks blue in certain light. It's hard to describe! I was going to link to the color, but it doesn't look ANYTHING like what they have on the site so you'll just have to wait. :-)

I was recently privileged to be a part of an evening of baptisms with REALITY, our church youth group. Six high schoolers gave their testimony and were baptized! It was awesome. I'm also excited to be going on the REALITY winter retreat again this year in early January.
Erik recently went on his first Men's Retreat and had a fantastic time!! (the link to pictures is on Facebook and will only work if you have an account). He's looking forward to making it a yearly tradition. Isn't he cute?! :-DLast Monday we had some young friends over while their parents were at a class for their foster parenting/adoption certification. Much fun was had by all! This picture was taken after the Barbies were shelved in favor of dressing up Meredith. "Now I will dress myself up!"In other news, the weather is doing it's whole "It's fall! Wait, it's still summer! Now it's fall again!" routine. Mostly we've had lovely weather with some hot thrown in. But fall means that certain things smell and taste better than any other time of the year . . . hence, I made spiced tea and am planning to make some pumpkin bread this week!School has started and I'm enjoying being part of the Community Reading Project again. I've been assigned to a different school which is just starting to participate in the program (in fact, I'm the only volunteer who is showing up so far). Hopefully we'll get some more folks soon!

I finished my Sampler Quilt class in September, and have enough blocks to put together a quilt for a guest bed--but now begins the long process of making the sashing . . . and then doing the binding. :-/ I think I like the piecing part much better!! Anyway, I need to back at it so I can actually finish it! Here's a preview, including the little slips of paper pinned on each square so I remember the order we decided on (please don't look at the boxes in the corner). By the time it is finished, the plan is to have that mattress on a box spring (still to be acquired) and bed frame (currently waiting in the garage), for the boxes to be gone, and for the room to be painted a nice shade of blue! :-D What else? We've been putting together a couple of baskets for a silent auction. I wish I'd taken pictures of them before we dropped them off--we had fun putting them together! We included some yummy fall drinks (different teas, chai mix, spiced tea), a cookie-in-a-jar mix, some refurbished candle holders with candles, a set of coasters with pretty photos in them, a pair of mugs and a pair of knitted mittens, all in cute wire-frame window boxes. Hopefully they'll bring in some much needed money! Speaking of which, if anyone is looking for a great cause to lend support to, check out Young Life. Our friends Troy & Shay Hess are desperately trying to raise funds to keep up their ministry in Kern County. Giving has decreased with the economy while, ironically, their volunteer staff and student participation has been exploding. I know they would appreciate your prayers.

We've also been getting materials together to organize and promote Operation Christmas Child at our church. This is such an awesome ministry--we loved filling our boxes together last year and are excited to be getting more people involved this year!

You thought I was kidding about being busy, didn't you? Ha!

We spent a fun evening with friends at their house last night, eating taco salad and some yummy homemade blackberry gelato! We moaned about football (we've been making picks each week with Brent and Julie and this week our records were SAD!!!) and chatted, I helped cut paper dolls and Erik played fooseball, and then we settled down for a game of Settlers of Catan. Fun!! And I have to say, as badly as we picked this week as a group, I did the best (for the first time) and even improved from last week!! :-D The girls are also holding onto a (slight) lead for the second week running--WOO HOO! Erik and Brent compete for who is going to buy coffee at their discipleship meeting each week; Julie and I are competing with the boys over the whole season for a dinner and date night prepared by the losing side. What's with the Packers losing again this week??! :-( Interesting note about time zones . . . there is no turning on the TV and watching the football game after church around here; it's more of a get-home-and-check-the-scores (and maybe catch the end of a game). Weird. Not as weird as it must be in Hawaii though!!

Here's a funny thing: Sometime in July, the part of a ginger root I had sitting on my counter sprouted a little shoot! When Ben and April were here, they suggested sticking it in some soil and keeping it on the counter so I could pull it out when I needed some, hack a little off and replant it. Well it has been growing like crazy! I'm wondering just how tall the shoots are going to get (it's in front in the ugly cool whip container). I need to find something bigger to put it in--and something more aesthetically pleasing! And I'll leave you with this: for the past two weekends, do you know what my sweet, sweet husband has been doing? Waking up bright and early on Sunday AND Monday and surprising me with a hot delicious breakfast cooked by him! Would you believe he did all the dishes this morning afterward? I tell you, a girl could get used to this . . . :-D

Sayonara! :-)

Grandpa

Pitting cherries for pies!Birthday chocolateI've been thinking about Grandpa's loves beyond pie and chocolate too. :-)

He loved God's creation and he never stopped marveling at the intricacies of design in nature. And he loved his family. Most of all, although he forgot a lot of things, he never forgot who he belonged to or where he was headed. I hope I can leave as solid a legacy someday.Mom said Pastor Cory told her that anytime they had a hymn night at church, Grandpa always requested the same one. The lyrics are below. I know Grandpa is glad to that lovely face!

We shall see His lovely face some bright golden morning,
When the clouds have rifted and the shades have flown;
Sorrow will be turned to joy, heartaches gone forever;
No more night, only light, when we see His face.

God shall wipe away all tears some bright golden morning,
When the journey's ended, and the course is run;
No more crying, pain or death in that home of gladness,
Trials cease, all is peace, when we see His face.

We shall meet to part no more, some bright golden morning,
At the gates of glory where our loved ones stand;
Songs of vict'ry fill the skies in that hour of greeting,
Endless days, endless praise, when we see His face.

To My Adoring (and Demanding) Public . . .

I'm sorry to say that I have gotten no further on pictures; this week has been crazy. I promise to try and do better next week! Pictures are on my To Do List starting Tuesday. Promise!!

Road Trip

Are you ready for a road trip?It will be slow going, but I've decided to post our first few days and hopefully that will help hold me accountable to keep on trucking with the photo organizing. Our first couple of days were simply a lot of driving; we didn't stop to explore, but just tried to get a lot of miles under our belts. We did get the chance to see some familiar faces along the way though, which was lots of fun! These shots from the car are in New Mexico as we got closer to Gallup where we spent the night. The first leg was about 670 miles.
Kari and Steve (along with Ray and Willa) graciously allowed us to sleep at their house our first night on the road. I grew up with Kari on the island and it's always fun to get together with her and her wonderful family.
The next day we drove another 700 miles and arrived in Guthrie, OK where April and Ben welcomed us!
Neither of the boys had ever been to Guthrie, so we enjoyed seeing the town together. We took the trolley tour . . .
Would you have stopped to pick up this bunch??
We got some yummy snow cones/slushes at the little hut near the trolley. April decided to try a SOUR one. Do you see that devilish grin??
I think Ben liked it.
April definitely did!
Andy and Erik also dragged us to several stores to do some browsing/shopping. Well, at least they were good sports about it. ;-D
April saw the perfect dress at one second hand store. Unfortunately, it was on a mannequin. Noelle helped her . . . retrieve it so she could try it on.
Oops. Her arm came off!
April held the arm so that Noelle could re-attach the torso . . .
Eventually they got her back together. Then April looked at the tag inside the dress and said, "This is way too big for me!" We made her try it on anyway.
This fit her better.
We also took the Masonic temple tour.
It's quite a place!
We spent an evening at Don and Shirley's and got the chance to see much of Ben's family. For some reason I didn't take any pictures once we got inside. :-( It was great to see the Coffin's and fun to hear stories of all the naughty things Ben and his siblings did in their younger days!
Don's garden is producing mega-melons!
Mercy welcomed us back at April and Ben's.
Josie and GB were glad to see us too. :-) I didn't get a picture of Wellington, but he purred a lot so I think he liked us.
We, of course, ate well!
And we learned a new game that Erik got for his birthday but hadn't had the chance to play yet: Munchkin.
We're a lot of people to descend upon a one bedroom apartment, but Ben's sister Anna loaned Erik and I the guest apartment above her veterinary clinic (where I also failed to take pictures). It was within easy walking distance of April and Ben's, and very comfortable. It was great to have two full days in Guthrie before we headed north!

Our last leg was the longest, over 1000 miles, and we ended up going through Milwaukee where traffic on the interstate was stopped due to the incredible flooding they got!

We'd had great weather all day, but as soon as we crossed the border into Wisconsin around Beloit it got very dark and stormy looking. We started to see big lightening in the distance and I was excited--I miss thunderstorms! In fact, I texted Ben, who was still in Cali, and he was jealous. Little did we know . . . (he was no longer jealous when his flight into Milwaukee the next day was canceled). As we drove on we started hearing thunder, and then it started to rain a little. Suddenly we were driving in torrential downpour! It finally started to lighten up and was pretty much done by the time we reached Milwaukee, but we had no idea just how much rain they had gotten until we tuned in on the radio as we sat in stopped traffic on the freeway. We did eventually get off the highway and navigated through the city until we could get back on (which wasn't until the far north side of town!)

Needless to say it was a looooong day/night, but we were glad to arrive safely in Sturgeon Bay albeit the middle of the night! The odometer read 2731.5 miles when we got there. :-)

More sometime in the future!
Good night, world.

New Addition

Well, we're home. The back yard is completely overgrown with some sort of crazy spreading succulent, the spring on the garage door broke in the middle of the night, there's a big chip in the windshield of the car, and the guest toilet is shut off because it started leaking. I have no idea when I'll get the trip pictures sorted and posted. ;-P

On a brighter note, the weather has been staying relatively "cool" with the highs only in the 90s which is a blessing for this time of year! And as we have an unexpected new member of the household, I thought I'd do a quick post and introduce him.

Somewhere along I-80 in the middle of Iowa, Noelle saw a black kitten right next to the road. He was still there when we looped around--a good ten minutes as we were in the middle of nowhere and exits were few and far between. After a bit of a chase he wore himself out and let Noelle catch him; he hissed once and then settled down to purring and didn't stop. We discovered the remains of what was probably his mother on the road; we don't know how long he'd been hanging out next to the freeway, but he was full of ticks, had a big gash/scab on his lip and one back foot, and the pads of his little feet had big sore spots on them. And he was so thin. :-(We pulled out the ticks and got some cat food when we stopped for gas, which he inhaled as quickly as we gave it to him and then drank and drank and drank. We spent the night in Lincoln, NE and called to find out about cat rescue places and the Humane Society, neither of which was open until well after we planned to be on the road. So we took him to the vet and him de-everythinged and vaccinated, etc. Then we got on the road again and he took turns sleeping on our laps.In the meantime of course, his purring and loving was settling him firmly in my heart and after a phone call to Erik, his homecoming was confirmed. The little peanut slept on our laps in the car for 3 1/2 days, purring and healing!

He did not, as you know, come home to be an only cat. Our household has been in a little bit of an uproar as we introduced a new kitten, but things are getting better every day (and the hissing is at an all-time low for the week). He has a little safe spot in the laundry room when he wants to get away, but more and more he's staying out and becoming more bold when the dogs are about. He still purrs a lot, but definitely has a LOT more energy than before. I'm not sure I'd want to take him on a road trip these days! :-)

Anyway, Noelle and I called him "Iowa" for a while, then "Nishna" after the Nishnabotna river we crossed, but Erik and I finally settled on a name which means, appropriately we thought, "hope walks."

Meet Nuri. :-)
Also, for those who heard about the earthquake in Ecuador near Quito this morning, Ben & Pei are fine and arrived at the Galapagos today!

The Wedding

Ben & Pei got married this past weekend! :-DAs you can imagine, I took a lot of photos; I've tried to pick a few from the different times throughout the weekend, but there are . . . more than a few. Hope you enjoy looking!

Mom flew out several days before the wedding and after spending a few days with Noelle, Andy and the kids, she and Noelle came down to Bakersfield (Andy flew down to Temecula on Friday evening).

Mom teaching Noelle & I how to crochet a dishcloth
On Friday morning, we headed to Temecula so that we could be there for the rehearsal at Wilson Creek Winery April helped, but the rest of us (Mom, Dad, Noelle, Jessica & I) browsed the shop and did a tasting.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch . . . Dad's sous-chefs were hard at work slicing and dicing.Dad brought Jackie this apron back from the winery. Ha!To say we ate well during the weekend would be an understatement in the extreme (thanks for feeding all of us so well, Dad!!)Can you see Ben Coffin's sculpted watermelon?
Friday was also Peter's birthday--Happy birthday!!
As the sun went down we enjoyed the lit patio in the back of the house
Ben & Pei giving gifts to Mom & DadBen with his attendants Bamberg (Ben) & Devin, who are proudly displaying their cigar boxesPei with her attendants Marie & Ruffy after opening their giftsAfter the gifts, some sat around the bonfire and chatted . . .
and others played Rock Band!
It was a great evening and lots of fun. And the weather was perfect all weekend long!

Saturday Pei and Ben did not see each other or talk before the wedding. We spent the day at the house the family rented together, enjoying the gorgeous day in the pool.
Isn't this what living in California is supposed to be like??
A little series of exciting entrances into the pool (forgive the plethora of pool pics--it was just such a stunning day):

April's Cannonball
Ben's Barrel Roll
Erik's Cannonball
Andy's Swirl & Drop
Noelle's Perfect Pike
Enjoying the hot tub
Some people didn't want to get wet . . . but that didn't always matter.
Ben & Jackie judge the Handstand Contest
Mom & April judged from the hot tub
Ms. Jessica joined us while Peter worked on his words for the ceremony
A little later in the day Ben was busy with the cake
It was not only stunningly beautiful, it was delicious! I took a picture of Ben & April with the finished cake at the reception, but I think I must have had someone else's camera--it's not in my pictures. :-/
Time for the groom to head to Wilson Creek! While he spent a couple of hours with Devin, Bamberg and Pete, and then got ready for the ceremony, we sat on the balcony and enjoyed the breeze and a glass of champagne.
Then it was time for us to get ready to go!
We tried to be a credit to those who brought us up by hand . . .
April had my camera during the ceremony. Who says I can't just attend an event without taking pictures? Who says my fingers were twitching and I kept poking her in the back to take more shots? :-)

The groom awaiting his bride
Here comes the bride! Pei looked absolutely gorgeous.
Peter did a great job with the ceremony and homily
Love their grins :-)
Mr. & Mrs. Ryder!
There were purple fans on our chairs to shade us from the sun and bubbles to blow as the newlyweds exited. Everyone also went home with a little bottle of the delicious Almond Champagne for which Wilson Creek is famous (I tried my best to make that sentence grammatically correct but I must say it does sound awkward). The ceremony followed by a fun (and delicious) dinner and reception.

Dad & Jackie
Mom & JessicaMay Mr. & Mrs. Ryder have many, many years of love and joy together!Suddenly it was time to go home! How time flies.

Lucky for us, our fun wasn't over just yet. Dad & Jackie are staying to do some visiting in California for the week before heading back and they drove up to our house for a couple of days.April and Ben also made a quick trip up on Sunday night and headed back to Pasadena after an early lunch on Monday. It was fun that they got to see our house and meet the pets! Dad also worked while he was here. He put in a bunch of light fixtures and changed out a pile of outlets and switches we've had waiting around for several months, and Jackie helped me pick out replacements for a spot I've been struggling with (yes, I ended that sentence with a preposition--my humblest apologies). I'll have to post pictures, but I had to draw the line somewhere on this post!! We also managed to play some dominoes, visit and relax a little in between all the projects (sorry for overworking you, Dad!) Today they headed to San Francisco to see Jackie's nephew and family; tomorrow they will drive to Sacramento to spend some time with Noelle & Andy.

We'll spend the next couple of days getting the house back in order and packing--we leave for Wisconsin early Sunday morning (and believe me, we'll be glad to go . . . the temperatures are on the rise and it's supposed to be in the low 100s the next few of days). :-/

And now my dear ones, it is 2:00 a.m. and I am signing off!
